How overtime is calculated

Article 107 requires the employer to pay, for each overtime hour, the hour’s wage plus 50% of the basic wage. Normal hours are 8 a day or 48 a week (Art. 98).

The hourly wage

Monthly wage divided by 240 hours — 8 hours across 30 days.

Hourly = wage ÷ 240

The overtime hour

The hourly wage plus half the basic hourly wage. With no allowances that is 1.5× the hour.

Overtime = hourly + (basic ÷ 480)

Rest days and holidays

Work on the weekly rest day or an official holiday counts as overtime at the same rate.

Ramadan

For Muslim employees, 6 hours a day or 36 a week — the month becomes 180 hours and each hour is worth more.

Hourly = wage ÷ 180

The common mistake

Multiplying the whole wage by 1.5. The hourly rate is computed on the full wage, but the 50% premium is computed on basic alone. On 7,200 basic plus 2,400 allowances the hour is 40 and the overtime hour is 55, not 60 — five too much every hour, on every payroll run.

Common questions

What is the overtime rate in Saudi Arabia?

The hour’s wage plus 50% of the basic wage — 1.5× the hour where there are no allowances. It is not 2.5×, as is sometimes claimed.

Do allowances count?

They count towards the hourly wage itself, but the 50% premium is computed on basic alone. Hence the two separate fields.

How do I get the hourly wage from a monthly salary?

Divide the monthly wage by 240 hours — 8 hours over 30 days. During Ramadan the divisor becomes 180 for Muslim employees.

Is Friday work overtime?

Work on the weekly rest day, usually Friday, counts as overtime at the same rate, as does work on official public holidays.

Is this legal advice?
